Miami Dolphins Players Visit Pediatric Oncology Patients at Alex’s Place at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Gibson and T Jason Fox along with Miami Dolphins Women’s Organization member Diane Philbin visited patients, their families and staff of alex’s place – Sylvester’s pediatric oncology clinic. The visit was in honor of the Dolphins Cycling Challenge (DCC) and the organization’s commitment to funding cancer research in South Florida.
“All the money that DCC raises goes straight to Sylvester. This money is very key for us because it goes to support research. It’s very important for us to do our research and find a cure for cancer. So we count on the Dolphins Cycling Challenge for support and we’re grateful for it,” said pediatric oncologist Dr. Edward Dela Ziga, from Alex’s Place at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. “It’s great to see the Miami Dolphins here with these children because they get excited when they see the players. They know that the Dolphins are working hard to bring them and their families relief from their problems. We’re very grateful for this visit.”
Christie Laporte, a patient at alex’s place who recently had surgery, said of the visit: “Super awesome. I’ve never met a Miami Dolphins player. For high school, I’ve visited their training camp bubble. It was really great to make that connection to now meeting a player.” She added, “This makes my day a lot better. It was going to be super long but now it’s going to be better.”
The children were greeted by the players as well as Mrs. Philbin, and each received a T-shirt, coloring sheets and a Dolphins Cycling Challenge goodie bag that included foam footballs, pencils, stickers and Miami Dolphins stuffed animals.
“The wins and losses in the football season, that brings plenty of ups and downs. But doing this visit is definitely one of the good parts of the season to brighten up kids’ days,” said Fox, who played collegiately for the University of Miami. For him, football and serving the community come full circle. “What’s so cool about football is people look up to you – especially kids. So when they see their team, or players from their team, come in, that’s always one of the fun side parts of my job. I know they might be having a tough time with the stuff they are going through and their families. But anything to brighten these kids up for a day or just to see their smiling faces makes it worth it.”
NBC's Chuck Todd spoke in Palm Beach
Journalist Chuck Todd, who is the moderator for Meet the Press and the political director for NBC News, was the speaker at the November 17 Forum Club of the Palm Beaches’ luncheon at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Todd spoke of the dysfunctional environment in Washington, D.C., about the recent general election and about the upcoming 2016 election cycle, in which Hillary Clinton is favored to run for the Democratic nomination and several candidates are considering a run on the side of the GOP. After the luncheon, Todd signed copies of his book, The Stranger: Barack Obama in the White House. Tom Ridge, former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security will be the speaker on Tuesday, December 16. Manny Fernandez to be inducted into 2014 Dolphin Honor Roll
Former Miami Dolphins DT Manny Fernandez will become the 27th member of the Dolphins Honor Roll. Manny joins the prestigious group after a vote by the Honor Roll committee.
Manny Fernandez will be inducted to the Honor Roll on Sunday, Dec. 21 during the halftime of the Dolphines game against the Minnesota Vikings.
“Manny Fernandez was the first of several elite defensive tackles who played for the Miami Dolphins,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Special Projects & Alumni Relations Nat Moore said. “Fernandez was an expert at controlling the line of scrimmage on defense and freeing up the linebackers to run and make tackles. We’re elated to celebrate his accomplishments by welcoming him to the prestigious Honor Roll.”
Fernandez spent his entire eight year NFL career (1968-75) with the Dolphins, joining the team as an undrafted free agent. He played in 103 games with Miami, including making 93 starts. A versatile player who was as good against the run as he was as a pass rusher, Fernandez’ 35 career sacks is the second highest total by any defensive tackle in team history, only trailing Bob Baumhower (39.5). Similarly, his 5.5 career sacks in the postseason are the third highest total overall in Dolphins history, behind Kim Bokamper (8) and Trace Armstrong (6). In addition, he led the Dolphins with 8.0 sacks in 1971, and remains one of only three tackles ever to lead Miami in that category in a single season. He is best remembered for his 17 tackles in Super Bowl VII, where he received strong consideration for the game’s Most Valuable Player award.
In 1990, he was selected to Miami’s Silver Anniversary team and in 2012 was named to the Dolphins Walk of Fame. Fernandez was named as the winner of the team’s Outstanding Defensive Lineman a franchise-record six times (1968-73). He was honored with the NFL’s Unsung Player Award in 1973. He also earned the Johnny Unitas Award in 1973 for the athlete who came into professional football in an unheralded manner and has made a significant contribution to the success of the team.
