A True Story Of A Rescue Dog

image1.JPG

Matthew Sparks - Roxy’s Story

When Scott and I decided to expand our family two years ago, there was no hesitation.  We knew that we would adopt and began by researching online to see if any rescued dogs caught our eyes.  After a few weeks of looking and considering, we visited the Broward County Animal Care Center by the airport, which does great work for the Greater Fort Lauderdale community.  We saw one of their rescues online, fully intending to adopt that particular dog. When we arrived, our choice had already been adopted, and doing our best not to be discouraged, we decided to visit the rest of the kennels.  Winding through the barking and jumping, we came upon a cage that seemed to be empty, until a two scruffy pups popped out from under the skirted bed to welcome us with a bark and quite a bit of enthusiasm.  One was white and fawn and the other black and brown, obviously sisters.  They had arrived with their brother just the day before and had been found on the street, probably discarded by a puppy mill because at 6 months, they were too old to fetch a premium price.  They were still under quarantine, and we weren’t able to meet them, but we were smitten.  We took their information and left without a decision.  I left the next day for a trip, but had a discussion with Scott that evening.  We knew that the white and fawn little girl could be the right choice for us and Scott said he would go by the next day to see if she was still available.  Animal Care completed a free spay (a requirement for all adopted animals) and after a $10 adoption fee (a wonderful October Special) we brought our little girl, Roxy, to her forever home.  Potty training - easy (we know we’re very lucky).  Barking at her reflection in mirrors, and windows and anything else reflective - not so easy, but it’s gotten better.  She is the queen of her domain and loves to lie on the concrete by the pool to survey her kingdom on a warm summer afternoon before coming in to have her favorite treat, a baby carrot.  For anyone considering adding a furry member to your family, please visit your local shelters.  Our newest rescue in Oakland Park, United Dog Rescue (uniteddogrescue.org) is already doing great work at their Commercial Boulevard location, and Animal Aid (animal-aid.com) on Prospect and NE 6th Ave does a wonderful job with smaller dogs and cats.  As Commissioner, I will work to ban puppy mills and the stores who use them.  Roxy was one of the lucky ones, and we are certainly lucky dads, but there are too many animals who are mistreated and abandoned.  Let’s make sure we get them into happy and caring homes!

Sampson- a one word name that perhaps conjures up some distant recollection of a slightly different spelled, bible-based warrior with supernatural powers, who was able to combat his enemies and perform heroic feats… or it may remind you of a Hanna-Barbera TV show of the late 1960’s, featuring another superhero, also imbued with great strength, endurance and agility.

Or you could be talking about Sampson, the self-described, out, gay, black comedian, activist, writer, speaker and fearless advocate of issues and concerns that speak to the challenges of those whose daily lives are marginalized and threatened. So you would not be far off no matter which Sampson/Samson comes to mind. Even though those comparisons are not entirely complete. Because Sampson, the comedian, is distinctly unique: a thinking, funny, passionate comic- who bridges culture, race, age and community with fresh humor, straddling an understanding and a perspective of the world that both an African American straight mom and a young white DL bisexual teenage boy, or someone out, just for a night of fun and laughter all could equally relate to, while trying to recover from non-stop laughs and serious reflection.

Above all else- Sampson is a uniquely talented and extremely funny storyteller. He draws from the brilliant comic styling’s of America’s top comic legends, such as Moms Mabley, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Joan Rivers, George Carlin and Whoopi Goldberg- just a few of his own comic heroes. Sampson draws from a rich reservoir of personal triumphs and everyday occurrences. Finding humor from his tough roots, being raised by a single mother in rural North Carolina to facing head-on, the judgmental cruelty and fierce hypocrisy of homophobic preachers and self-appointed, so-called ‘family values’ bigots. Sampson deals with the toxic daggers of our society’s sometimes judgmental and hateful tendencies with warm grace, intellectual honesty and damn funny jokes.

For over a decade, he has built his brand from the ground up, developing an almost cult-like following, literally working the smallest of stages, as he puts it, “in coffee shops, STD clinics, gas stations, and apartment kitchens” to most recently in the largest of venues, headlining the Howard Theater in his own show, as the first African American, out, gay male comic, as well as The White House, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Broadway in NYC, The Famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, San Francisco Punch Line, colleges, cruises and sold out concert venues around the world. He's recorded three acclaimed live, stand-up comedy concert albums, including his most recent "That B*@&! Better Be Funny", which was considered for a 2014 Grammy Nomination for Best Comedy Album. Sampson has collaborated with notable entertainers such as Whoopi Goldberg, Luenell, Thea Vidale, Paul Mooney, Charo, Margaret Cho, Angela Bassett, Bruce Vilanch and appeared on BET, VH-1, CBS, OWN Network and MTV. He is also a gifted writer, penning two successful books and he has gained a serious following as a prolific public speaker, invited to campuses to lecture at places like Harvard University.

Among the myriad of accolades that he's received for his comedy, he's been named "One of the 12 Queer Comics That Every One Must Know", byOUT.com and "One of The Funniest LGBT Comics" by Buzz Feed, Huffington Post, The Advocate & SWERV Magazine. In 2014, he was awarded the Entertainer of The Year Award by Blatino Oasis in Palm Springs, CA and in 2016 was nominated by the Bay Area Reporter for Best Male Comic in The San Francisco Bay Area.

Feature: Peter Bisuito

As seen on Oprah, internationally known comedian Peter Bisuito aka “My Big Funny Peter” is the world’s ONLY Gay Bodybuilding Muscle-Bear Comedian. He travels the world including his recent successful European tour with sold out shows in Manchester & Amsterdam. He also performs on cruise ships and his comedy was briefly seen on Oprah. He was also the opening act for Bianca Del Rio, Del Shores and Erasure's lead singer Andy Bell. Peter is not your typical stand-up comedian. Due to his theater background, Peter incorporates musical numbers and funny video presentations during his shows. Peter recently performed a SOLD OUT show at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale and will be performing another show this December in a "Back by Popular Demand Holiday Concert" called My Big Funny Peter - Stuff Me for the Holidays as part of The Broward Centers fall/winter season line-up!

Is Walmart Out To Destroy Local Progressive Communities

East New York residents protest Walmart in front of New Lots Hardware Glass and Locks, Brooklyn, in April.
One has to wonder is Walmart just a conspiracy to destroy local progressive communities while walmart is closing hundreds of stores this month they are building in Oakland Park, in a space that is not suited for them with little parking and is going to destroy the whole traffic flow of the area, never mind the many mom and pop business they will destroy and the jobs they will take to pay very little so bad they employees will have to use food stamps and medicaid all on the taxpayer dimes and after they destroy the community they will close the store leaving the tax payers holding the bag, is this really just a conspiracy to destroy progressive communities is my question?

Commissioners Ban Fracking in Broward County

County Commissioners unanimously banned any type of hydraulic and acid fracturing, known as "fracking", to extract oil and gas from the ground in Broward County.  The vote comes as the Florida Legislature contemplates a series of bills that would stop local governments from regulating the practice.

"This is about protecting our water supply and environment," said Commissioner Beam Furr, who brought the ordinance to the Commission for a vote.  "We're discussing a ban on fracking today and at the same time state lawmakers are discussing taking away our authority to do so.  We must ban this now."

Fracking involves the pumping of huge amounts of water, sand and chemicals into the ground using extreme pressure to recover oil and gas deposits.  Oil and gas companies are not currently required by federal or state law to disclose formulas used in fracking.

"This is Tallahassee once again trying to take away the authority of local elected officials who represent the people who live in Broward County.  This is a critical issue for us.  If necessary, I'm in favor of pursuing appropriate legal remedies to enforce this ordinance," said Broward County Mayor Marty Kiar.

Dozens of people attended a public hearing to tell Commissioners they opposed fracking and spoke in favor of the ordinance to ban the controversial practice. An application to drill an exploratory oil well in the Florida Everglades, just west of the city of Miramar is currently under review by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Public and private water utilities across Broward County rely entirely upon groundwater sources, including the Biscayne and Floridan Aquifers for drinking water supplies.  The Floridan Aquifer alone is the source of drinking water for ten million residents.

Many of the chemicals used during the fracking process have resulted in thousands of documented cases of water contamination and adverse effects on human health and the environment in the United States.

Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Historic Stranahan House Museum Present “Native Reel Cinema Fest”

Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Historic Stranahan
House Museum Present “Native Reel Cinema Fest”

The Seminole Tribe of Florida, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Seminole Paradise, and the Historic Stranahan House Museum present South Florida’s first “Native Reel Cinema Fest” during the Annual Seminole Tribal Fair and Pow Wow on Friday, February 5 at 5:30 pm and Saturday, February 6 at 5:00 pm at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The free screening of Steven Paul Judd’s film “Ronnie BoDean,” starring Wes Studi, will be presented in conjunction with an interactive session with the director. This event will help provide the platform of showcasing Native American talent through film.

“Native Reel Cinema Fest” will spotlight on native short films by Kiowa/Choctaw director and writer Steven Paul Judd. Wes Studi stars as the eponymous Ronnie BoDean, a larger-than-life outlaw who must shake off an epic hangover and use his considerable street knowledge to take on his greatest challenge yet – babysitting. Judd’s film presents the first Native American “anti- hero” allowing for a new opportunity to explore the culture’s representation in films. The film was financed by a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Judd is known primarily as a filmmaker; yet he’s also a prolific visual artist whose mashups of Native experiences and disposable American pop culture are sly and often downright funny. His creations include paintings, prints, poster art, photography and t-shirt designs.

The evening will include the presentation of the film accompanied by two of Spencer Battiest’s music videos also directed by Judd – “Love of My Life” and “The Storm”.  Battiest is an American Indian singer-songwriter, musician, producer, and actor from Hollywood, Florida. In 2013, Spencer became the first American Indian artist to sign with Hard Rock Records. His music release song "The Storm" garnered his first music video win as a musician. The music video was filmed entirely on the Seminole Reservation in Florida highlighting historical tribal land, ancestry and culture. The song was written as a tribute to the Seminole tribe of Florida, and homage to his parents, grandparents and tribal leaders. Battiest will join Judd during the Q&A session.

Everett Osceola
The event is coordinated by Seminole Tribal Members and film co-producers,Everett Osceola and Oliver Wareham, with the support of April Kirk. Osceola serves as the Cultural Ambassador for the Seminole Tribe and is an educator sharing the importance of the Seminole culture as instilled by his family. Wareham serves as an Official Commissioner for Seminole Gaming and is a photographer and storyteller sharing the beauty of the Seminole culture through images and the spoken word. Kirk is the Executive Director of the Historic Stranahan House Museum and a painter. The team envisions bringing a larger multi-day Native American Film Festival to South Florida in the future - which will become the only one of its kind on the southeastern coast.

The portrayal of Native Americans in film has been fed by stereotypes, however, a growing number of pictures have portrayed indigenous peoples of the Americas in a more historically accurate light. In recent years, the growth of Native Americans in all avenues of the film industry has been substantial. There are only a few Native American film festivals in America, all of which take place in the mid and west coast of the country, with the exception of the Native American Film and Video Festival. The “Native Reel Cinema Fest” goal is to focus on films that can provide an in depth look into Native cinema in America.

The Seminole Tribe and the Stranahans have a long and mutually respectful relationship. Collaborative efforts between the two strive to bring an awareness and appreciation of Seminole Culture and how it has positively impacted the lives of areas first settlers. Programs work to preserve, interpret, and promote the two histories to residents and visitors alike.

Last year the Seminole Tribe and Stranahan House partnered under the leadership of Osceola and Kirk to bring “Seminole Cinema Night” to the Historic Stranahan House Museum. This was the first-ever local screening of the 1958 film, “The Exiles” produced by director Kent MacKenzie. The documentary, which was lost for nearly 50 years and restored in 2008, follows three Indian Americans who have left their reservations to live in downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row. The film reveals the complex social issues faced by these young teens and highlights many challenges that still exist today.

"They say pictures are worth a thousand words,” said Everett Osceola. “Native Reel Cinema Fest gives you the opportunity to experience our journey through our words and images.”
