Ft. Lauderdale officers terminated over ‘racially biased’ video, texts

“The officers were terminated due to a sustained department misconduct,” said Adderley. “There is zero tolerance for this type of behavior within the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. All of the officers were immediately removed from having any contact with the public.”
“It is inappropriate and it is racist,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler.
The officers, according to Adderley, had worked predominantly with people in an African-American neighborhoods in the past.
The investigation started after the ex-fiance of one of the officer’s came forward in October 2014.
“She said she had personally seen it herself and felt it was inappropriate,” said Adderley.
The woman spoke by phone with CBS 4’s Carey Codd on Friday and said she stood by her decision to turn over the video and text messages.
“We cant have people like this protecting us,” the woman said.
Dozens of pages of text messages were released on Friday and a number of the messages referenced violence towards black people.
According to the investigative report, “the messages criticized their coworkers’ grammar, appearance, work ethic and referred to an entire shift as lazy [expletives] ....the officers also exchanged text messages that included derogatory comments towards Hispanics and homosexuals.”
“It is extremely unfortunate that these acts of racism and hate ever took place and that these Fort Lauderdale employees acted in this manner,” said Fort Lauderdale City Manager Lee Feldman.
The Fraternal Order Of Police released a statement on the issue Friday, saying in part: “The Fraternal Order of Police is a multicultural organization which does not tolerate racism. Our officers take great pride in our commitment to diversity. Our dedicated officers have positive relationships with residents in every community we serve.”
“Everyone is entitled to due process and these officers have the right to a fair review of the facts.”
In response to the incident, Adderley said the city has created a human diversity class that every officer must attend annually.

March Madness 2015 Is Here

March Madness 2015 is here.
Half the teams were eliminated in the first round, and the round of 32 is underway.
March Madness (the trademarked nickname for the NCAA's annual 68-team tournament to determine the men's basketball champion) is a cultural event, one that's swelled beyond the normal boundaries of the sports world. Even if you're not a huge basketball fan, there's a good chance you might be invited to fill out a bracket or comment on a big upset.
As such, you might have some questions about March Madness. We have some answers.

1) How does March Madness work?

ncaa bracket
The NCAA bracket, updated after day two. (NCAA)
March Madness is a single-elimination tournament between 68 men's college basketball teams. This year, it runs from March 17 through April 6. The women's tournament has 64 teams but otherwise works the same, and runs from March 20 through April 7.
Teams make it into the tournament one of two ways: about half get an automatic bid by winning their conference tournaments (conferences are regional groups of teams that play one another, such as the Big Ten), and half get at-large bids, awarded by the official NCAA selection committeebased on who it thinks deserves to get in.
The NCAA tournament's structure is simple. After four of the lower-ranked teams were eliminated in a "play-in" round, the 64 teams played each other, with the winners moving on and the losers going home. The field has now narrowed to 32 teams, and will then shrink to the "Sweet 16," the "Elite 8," the "Final Four," and the championship. Whoever wins the championship cuts down the nets in celebration — a tradition that dates to 1947.

Miami Beach Unveils New Lifeguard Towers for its Centennial

The City of Miami Beach enthusiastically announces the unveiling of two new brightly colored lifeguard towers that will be added to the already iconic 29-piece collection between South Pointe and 87 Street. The 29 existing towers recently received a fresh coat of paint in preparation to celebrate the centennial year. The two new towers – one round and one square – were designed by architect William Lane.

Miami Beach officials will showcase one of the new towers on Friday, March 20 at 10:30 a.m. Festivities will take place on the beachfront at 10 Street, behind Ocean Rescue headquarters.

“The lifeguard towers are a reflection of Miami Beach Art Deco history. Residents and visitors have grown attached to them over the years because they really resonate with South Beach ‘sun and fun,’” said Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy L. Morales. “Now, we have two more stands for people to enjoy, and we are working to add more and eventually replace the older towers with new ones when we are able.”

Ribbon-cutting event planned for Friday, March 20 at 10:30 a.m. on 10 Street Beach

The new round lifeguard tower will be placed at 10 Street permanently. Its color scheme is ice plant green, fusion pink and knockout orange. The existing round tower will be moved from 10 Street to its new home at 43 Street. The new square tower, a color combination of slip blue, lupine blue, and outrageous green, will be on display at the City’s centennial celebration main event area and then relocated to its permanent position at 58 Street.

Miami Beach Fire Chief Virgil Fernandez said, “The Ocean Rescue team is truly excited to have two more lifeguard towers on our beach both for their aesthetic appearance, and for their primary purpose of safeguarding our beaches.”

The new towers were built locally with structurally sound components, such as impact windows and pressure treated wood with stainless steel and aluminum hardware. Their custom designs and color schemes are reminiscent of the five original towers designed by architect William Lane post Hurricane Andrew.  He aimed to utilize free form fun shapes and deco/pop inspired colors to enhance the simple ‘nails and bolts’ woodwork construction and easily connect to people of different ages, cultures and social backgrounds.

In 2006, the City’s Property Management Division built additional lifeguard towers that still provide a lookout point for today’s lifeguards.

The new round lifeguard tower cost is approximately $88,000 and the square tower cost is approximately $77,000. Funding was provided by Quality of Life Resort Tax Funds.

For high resolution photos or further details regarding the lifeguard towers project, please contact CIP Public Information Specialist Lauren Firtel at laurenfirtel@miamibeachfl.gov or 305.673.7071.
