Congresswoman Frankel - House Needs To Pass Unemployment Insurance Extension

Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-22) called on House leadership in the United States Congress to immediately begin debate on the extension of unemployment insurance, following the passage of a bipartisan agreement in the U.S. Senate.

“There are over two million job-seeking Americans, who left work through no fault of their own, and need the economic security  unemployment insurance can provide. Many of them are veterans, who bravely served our country but are now struggling to pay their bills, feed their families and keep their homes. I urge the House to come together in a bipartisan manner, as it had done for decades, and pass this extension,” said Congresswoman Frankel.

If the bipartisan Senate agreement became law, it would benefit nearly 2.8 million people nationwide, including over 132,000 people in Florida.  According to the U.S. Census Bureau estimates, unemployment insurance kept 3.2 million Americans from falling below the poverty line in 2010 alone.  The U.S. Labor Department found in a recent study that for every dollar spent on unemployment benefits, two dollars are pumped back into the economy.
